Opened in April, 2024, the 1888 Plaza sits on the site of the historic 1888 building that was at the corner of Johnson and Commerce Streets in Downtown until late 2017. The Plaza project was a joint effort between the City of Mineola, Mineola Economic Development Corporation, and the Meredith Foundation and is dedicated to the memory of Harry Meredith, a longtime resident and benefactor to the city.
Ever aware of the town's history and the dedication to preserve it, city staff worked with architect, Mark A. Thacker, AIA, and Shamburg and Polk, Inc. (SPI) Engineering to create a design for the plaza that included a public restroom facility reminiscent of the former Mineola landmark. There are sitting areas, free multi-media charging stations, free public Wi-Fi (throughout downtown), and information on events, area attractions, and a map of downtown. There's also plenty of shade for a laid-back afternoon or leisurely lunch with views of the gazebo, passing trains, and the historic brick streets. 121 S Johnson Street. Join the City of Mineola, the Mineola Meredith Foundation, and the Mineola Economic Development Corporation as we officially open the 1888 Plaza in downtown. The ribbon cutting ceremony will be at 9:00 am on Saturday, April 27th at the Plaza located at 121 South Johnson Street.
