Mineola, TX – The City of Mineola is excited to announce that the installation of fiber-optic internet service, in partnership with Peoples Telephone, is well underway. Phase I of the project has already begun, with Phase II starting soon. This transformative initiative aims to bring high-speed internet to the entire Mineola community, marking a significant step forward in our city's technological advancement.
What to Expect During Installation
As part of the installation process, contractors are currently digging in yards and running fiber optic lines. We understand that this may cause some temporary inconvenience, and there might be some mess while the work is in progress. However, please be assured that all contractors are committed to cleaning up the areas at the end of the job.
All work is being conducted within the city's right-of-way. We kindly ask all residents to avoid removing any flags that have been placed in yards, as these are crucial markers used to identify water and gas lines. Your cooperation is essential to ensure the safety and efficiency of the installation process.
Investment and Future Growth
The Mineola Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) and the City Council have shown their strong support for this project, each committing $460,000 over the next four years. This combined investment of $920,000 represents a 25% share of the estimated $3.8 million project, which covers the actual installation costs of labor and materials.
Peoples Telephone has set an ambitious target of converting 30% of the 1,925 available customers in Mineola to their new fiber-optic service. Importantly, there will be no installation costs for new customers, and pricing will remain competitive.
A Six-Phase Project for Lasting Impact
The fiber-optic installation will be completed in seven phases over an estimated 18-month period. Peoples Telephone already has the necessary framework in place and has completed the design work to efficiently reach every corner of Mineola. This project is expected to serve as a catalyst for economic growth and significantly enhance our city's technological infrastructure for decades to come.
“This is a big endeavor,” said Jason Slagle, Chief Business Development Officer at Peoples Telephone. “It will set up the city for decades to come from a technology standpoint and will future-proof technology for Mineola.”
Moving Forward Together
We appreciate the community’s patience and support as we work towards a more connected Mineola. The installation of fiber-optic internet is a critical investment in our city's future, promising to enhance the quality of life for all residents and boost local economic development.
