The 15th anniversary of the operation of the Mineola Historical Museum and the Rededication of a Time Capsule and Cornerstone were celebrated Monday afternoon at the museum.
Mayor Jayne Lankford welcomed those in attendance and spoke of her love for Mineola and her hopes for its future generations. Landmark Commission Chairman Jim Phillips spoke of the importance of learning about and from our history. Commission Secretary Martha Holmes spoke of the people and process involved with the new time capsule and its placement in the museum cornerstone to be removed in 2073. The previous cornerstone placed in the cornerstone in 1936 was removed as part of the 150th celebration last year.
Mr. Phillips and Museum Board Chairperson Novada Bigham, with Mayor Jayne Lankford overseeing, performed the removal of the bunting from the new plaque covering where the cornerstone was placed. Members of the Mineola City Council and staff attended before having to leave for a special budget meeting. The Meredith Foundation was represented. The Wood County Monitor, members of the Museum Board, Landmark Commission and Main Street Board were present as well as members of the business community and history buffs.
Afterward the attendees were welcomed inside for an after hours viewing and cupcakes and punch. A brand new exhibit on loan from Kacey Musgraves after her latest Grammy win was on view, among many other treasures. The Museum is open Thursday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.
